Safety Pilot-thanks for doing such a great job!

On behalf of all of the volunteers staffing the Safety Pilot, we would like to thank all of you for doing such an outstanding job during drop off and pick up!  And we have been obscene gesture-free for 2 days!  Thanks also for the feedback-you have been very thoughtful in delivering your concerns and for that we are all very grateful.    We would also like to say GREAT JOB to all of the walkers the past few days-it’s been so great to see  and I believe the ENTIRE Gage Rd. crew walked on Wednesday-it looked like a real Walking Bus!  Thanks to Amy Hill for providing the excellent information and motivation.

As we look to week  2 of the Pilot, here are a few clarifications and changes:

1.  If you have a 4th or 5th grader as well as a child in K, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade and the kids WALK home, they exit out the FRONT doors.  We are making sure the message to the kids at school is consistent.  Akenside pick-up is for children going home in cars only.  If your children walk to school in the AM, K, 1, 2 & 3 go to their lines in front and 4th & 5th line up in back with the rest of their classmates.

2.  Kindergarten Parents-we hear you!  If you are uncomfortable dropping off /picking up your Kinder so far down Woodside, please use the drop zone located by the Kinder doors.  We have volunteers standing there to help get your child in and out of the car.  If you have older Children in addition to your Kinder, they may be dropped  in that zone as well.  We are having signs made to clearly mark the area and ask that the area be used exclusively for Parents with  Kindergarten Students.  It is a small area and is one of the worst congestion areas along Woodside.

3.  Because you all have been so great about NO PARKING IN THE YELLOW ZONE, we are able to continue to have the Bus Drop-off and pick up the Children in the FRONT.  This Bus Drop Zone is the safest area for the bus to load and unload and we thank you for keeping this area clear.  Sue Sherman will continue to escort your child to and from the bus.  (Thanks Sue!)

4.  RAIN!  With the rain will come more traffic so this is where we will see how the plan works with a heavy traffic load.  So far so good, but please be prepared for a back up with the inclement weather and allow yourself extra time.

5.  Arriving at 3:10 is KEY.  This timeframe allows your child to exit the building and be ready for pick-up-especially in back.  If you would like to hang out on the sidewalk, please find a legal parking spot and come hang out.

6.  Please pass this info along to your caregiver and any one else that may be picking up your child.  We have spoken with several folks (Nannies and Granparents etc) who were unaware of the new procedure and were very frustrated and worried about not being able to find the children.  Happy reunions all around, but communicating to those folks is really important.

7.  Please have your children cross at streets where there are crossing guards. We realize they have to go a bit out of the way, but this is the safest way for them to travel.

Feedback is going to be critical during this Pilot so please e-mail Samantha Durst with suggestions and input.  So far, most feedback has been very constructive and well thought out.  Very cool.  I will provide my accurate e-mail this time.  Sorry about the error-truly it was..uh..unintentional.

We still need volunteers moving into weeks 2 & 3, but HUGE thanks to those of you that have helped out.  You have made a real difference.
