Kerry James Marshall
BIOGRAPHY
Kerry James Marshallis an internationally recognized artist who lives in Chicago. He received his
B.F.A. from Otis Arts Institute in Los Angeles and is currently Associate
Professor of Art at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His recent one person
exhibitions include "Mementos," a travelling exhibition, "The
Garden Project," at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, "Telling
Stories: Selected Paintings," a travelling exhibition organized by The
Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, and "Terra Incognita," at the
Chicago Cultural Center. His work has been included in the Whitney Biennial,
"Documenta X," in Kassel, Germany, and "No Doubt: African
American Art of the 90s," at Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in
Connecticut. In addition to his painting and other visual work, Marshall has
also worked as a production designer on several films, including Julie Dash’s Daughters
of the Dust and Haile Gerima’s Sankofa. He has been honored with a
MacArthur Fellowship, a CalArts/Alpert Award in the Arts for Visual Arts, an
American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Art, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award
and a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
