hike and bike logoLace up those tennis shoes and strap on your bike helmets! Hike and Bike Week starts Monday, October 5, and runs through Friday, October 9.

This is a great way to promote exercise and safety at the same time.  Please check your e-backpacks Central School e-backpack for detailed information about what to wear each day, and encourage your children to walk or ride their bikes to school, weather permitting.  Water bottles will be distributed to the classrooms on Friday for each child to bring home.  If you have any questions, please contact Melanie Strubbe at strubbem@centralptonews.org.

Turnoff Week Committee News

TelevisionAre you ready to start? Have you seen the Save the Date flyer? Are you a little nervous?

Don’t fret: we’ve made Turn Off week (April 20-26) easy for you! Be sure to enroll in all of the great classes offered by the Riverside Arts Center and Principle Dance. The classes are being held for Central Students exclusively! If we do not fill the classes soon, enrollment will be opened up to other schools. Details and registration were sent home in the “save the date” flyer. You can download the forms from the PTO Website if you need another copy. The events are planned toward the end of the week. As one committee member said, “It’s when we will need it the most — we may be at the end of our ropes!” Please support Turn Off Week and the arts community!

Remember to sign up directly with the Riverside Public Library for the exciting family astronomy event to be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. You may register directly with the library at 442-6366. Nothing beats a few wishes upon a star during a cold spring.

And, did you see that the Olmsted Society is hosting a landscaping day on Saturday April 25th? Another great family activity! Go out & get muddy with your buddy.

The more days you spend away from the screen, the more chances your child will have in the raffle to win prizes!

Any questions? Call me or e-mail me (info in PTO directory).

Hike and Bike Week News

Walk to School logoOctober is International Walk to School Month! Let’s celebrate by walking or riding our bikes to school the week of October 6-10th.

Why “Walk or Ride” to School?

  • Promote physical activity and strong health
  • Protect the environment by reducing auto gas emissions
  • Promote biking and walking safety

The week-long celebration will include:

  • “Safety” Monday: Kick-off the week by wearing yellow or orange safety colors to school! Teachers and parents should review biking/walking safety tips with students.
  • “Earth Friendly” Tuesday: Wear green to school as a tribute to the environment.
  • “High Energy” Wednesday: Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack/lunch to school and eat healthy foods throughout the day. Wear Central’s school colors ( Red / White ) or Centralwear / Spiritwear — to show your “energy”.
  • “Hats off to Exercise” Thursday: Students may wear a hat to school to celebrate the importance of exercise.
  • Early Release Day Friday: Join us in Lombard for a free roller skating party.
