Hike and Bike Week Results

walk to schoolHike and Bike Week was a success! Thanks to everyone who participated!

Here are the lucky raffle winners:
Kindergarten: Adam Dahlgren
1st grade: Wade Dahlgren
2nd grade: A.J. Smith
3rd grade: Carter Robertson
4th grade: Brady Vaia
5th grade: Noah Breit

All Central students will be receiving a water bottle to celebrate all of their efforts during Hike & Bike Week! It will be a reminder throughout the school year of the impact they can make on the environment!

Did you know that we helped reduce Central’s “carbon footprint?” A “carbon footprint” is the amount of CO2, a gas made up of carbon and oxygen, that is emitted into the atmosphere by a community. These greenhouse gases trap heat within the atmosphere and have a serious impact of the global climate by raising global temperatures.

So, just how many pounds of CO2 did Central students prevent from entering the atmosphere during Hike and Bike week?

Here is an estimate from our PTO Environmental Concerns Committee:

Based on the assumptions that the roundtrip drive from home to school is 1 mile, average gas mileage is 18 mpg, and burning 1 gallon of gasoline creates 9.5 pound of CO2…every student that walked or biked all 5 days, prevented 5.2 pounds of CO2 from being emitted. So, for just one day of walking or biking, the creation of a little over 1 pound of CO2 was prevented!

So how big is a pound of CO2? It helps to think of CO2 as gas trapped inside a balloon. Filling a balloon with one pound of CO2 would swell the balloon to about the size of a rubber exercise ball. The balloon would be about two and a half feet across!

For every car trip to school that was avoided, one giant balloon of CO2 wasn’t exhaled into the atmosphere!

Central LogoIf you need to contact your child or drop something off for your child during the day, please go directly to the Central School office. The office staff are more than happy to relay messages or pass on forgotten items. Parents should NOT be coming into recess areas to see their children. This creates a difficult situation for the staff and makes safety identification impossible.

These procedures are in place for everyone’s safety, especially the children!  Thank you!
